Pomp sparks debate: Has Bitcoin DeFi project Sovryn really overtaken Uniswap v3 by TVL?

Analysts are arguing whether the RSK-based Bitcoin money market, Sovryn, has a TVL of $52 million ... or $2 billion. Sovryn, a BTC money market protocol built on Bitcoin-based smart contract platform RSK, recently appeared to be shooting up through the decentralized finance rankings. On June 9, Bitcoin commentator, Anthony Pompliano , shared data to his one million followers from decentralized finance data aggregator, DeFi Llama, indicating the protocol had amassed a total value locked (TVL) of $1.95 billion — ranking it 14th for the sector and beating out DeFi darling Uniswap v3. Sovryn has a higher TVL than Uniswap V3. I keep telling everyone that DeFi infrastructure on Bitcoin is the most mispriced opportunity in the market. Proceed as you wish https://t.co/YZpcSrXW9D — Pomp (@APompliano) June 9, 2021 Pomp and many of his followers are aggrieved that Ethereum focused platforms such as DeFi Pulse do not list Bitcoin DeFi projects like Sovryn and Stacks, with the influenc...

Alleged $3.6B crypto Ponzi's 'victims' still believe the exchange is legit

Some of those caught up in an alleged $3.6 billion crypto Ponzi scheme are refusing to aid police investigations as they still expect to triple their investments. Victims of an alleged $3.6 billion crypto Ponzi scheme in South Korea are reportedly hampering the progress of a police investigation and a joint lawsuit — as they still believe in the project and hold out hopes of getting a return on their investments. On June 4, Korean law firm Daegon reportedly filed a joint complaint against V Global, its CEO, and three executives on behalf of 130 investors and the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency. The Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency is reportedly investigating V Global for an alleged crypto Ponzi scheme that reportedly defrauded around 69,000 people out of 4 trillion won ($3.6 billion) — while promising investors they would triple their investments. A notice on the company’s website says that it strongly denies the "false" claims and has filed a complaint with the Seocho Polic...

South African Court Submissions Expose Lies and Deceptive Tactics Used to Perpetuate MTI Bitcoin Ponzi Scheme

New submissions by a South African regulator, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and liquidators have exposed the web of lies and deceptive tactics that were used by Mirror Trading International (MTI) CEO Johann Steynberg and others to perpetuate the Ponzi scheme. Undeclared Losses In its report filed with the South African court, the regulator also exposes the true extent of losses that were incurred by the bitcoin investment company. For instance, in what the FSCA calls the “first period,” MTI had a “total of nearly 51 bitcoin (that) were deposited with Belize-based forex broker FXChoice, but 22 — or 43% — of these coins were lost by the traders.” However, at this point there was “no multi-level marketing involved.” Nevertheless, this would change in the second period “when Steynberg purportedly introduced a computerized trading bot” that falsely guaranteed returns of 10% each day. The report explained: FX Choice reported to the FSCA that 1,846 bitcoin were deposite...

DOGE vs BTC: Elon Musk declares crypto ‘space race’ with BitMEX has begun

Can BitMEX and Bitcoin beat Elon Musk and Dogecoin to launch the first crypto asset into lunar orbit? A 21st-century space race appears to be brewing between Elon Musk and BitMEX, with both parties pledging to launch their respective crypto of choice to the literal moon first. On June 4, the popular crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX announced it would be supporting space robotics firm, Astrobotic Technology, in the company’s mission to send its first commercial lander to the moon during Q4 2020. Noting that the mission aims to be the first instance in which “a private company leading a coalition of government, academia, industry, and international partners reaches the lunar surface,” BitMEX plans to make the occasion by delivering a one-of-a-kind physical Bitcoin to the moon’s surface. Referring to Musk as a “Dogecoin protagonist,” BitMEX added: “We’ve nothing against Dog Money, we felt it was only right to help Bitcoin get there first.” The announcement followed Elon Musk’s ea...

New analysis sheds light on DOJ Bitcoin seizure, as JBS pays massive $11M ransom

The FBI may have access to a lot more BTC in hacking group's addresses. JBS USA Holdings Inc. has paid an $11 million ransom in Bitcoin to cybercriminals as new details emerge over the FBI’s recovery of assets from a previous heist. The payment, estimated to be more than 300 BTC at current prices, was made to shield JBS factories from further disruption. The firm is the world’s largest meat company by sales, processing beef, poultry, and pork from Australia to South America and Europe. Andre Nogueira, chief executive of the Brazilian meat company's U.S. division, said that the payment was painful and made after the majority of JBS plants were up and running again to ensure there were no further attacks. According to the Wall Street Journal , the FBI last week attributed the JBS attack to REvil, a criminal cybercrime group with ties to Russia. The latest high-profile Bitcoin ransom payment will no doubt add to pressure on legislators to act. Earlier today Democratic Senator...

Proposed New York Bitcoin mining ban watered down to allow green projects

New York senators have amended a proposal to ban all crypto mining for three years, and are now seeking to only stop mining firms backed by carbon-based fuel sources. A proposed crypto mining ban calling for a forced three-year hiatus on all mining operations in New York has been watered down — and will now allow green projects. The bill passed in the senate on June 8, and has now been referred to the state assembly. If the bill is passed in the assembly, it will be delivered to Governor Andrew Cuomo to either approve or veto the proposed legislation. The initial New York Senate Bill 6486A sought to halt all crypto mining for three years in order to conduct environmental impact reviews on mining operations in the tri-state area. However, the bill was amended in the senate to get it over the line, and the revised 6486B-bill is now focused solely on any firm that uses carbon-based fuel sources to power proof-of-work crypto mining. #NYSenate Bill S6486B, sponsored by @SenatorP...

Elizabeth Warren compares 'bogus' crypto to 'legitimate' CBDCs in senate hearing

"The threats posed by crypto show that congress and federal regulators can't continue to hide out, hoping crypto will go away," said the Massachusetts senator. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren did not mince words when it came to criticizing crypto, but seemed to consider a federally-backed digital currency as a possible solution to address problems around financial inclusion in the United States. At a Wednesday session of the Senate Banking Committee discussing a U.S. government-backed central bank digital currency, or CBDC, Warren said the recent explosion in cryptocurrencies had helped many people understand the foundational technology on which digital currencies were based. However, she called crypto a “fourth rate alternative to real currency.” “Digital currency from central banks has great promise,” said Warren. "Legitimate digital public money could help drive out bogus digital private money." Discussing what she labeled as “bogus” currency, Warre...
